The Monroe County School District and some other school districts in north Mississippi counties announced they would keep schools closed for a third day, as ice and slush remained on some roads and crippling cold moved in Tuesday night.
Schools in other Golden Triangle-area counties, including Columbus, Starkville and West Point city and Lowndes, Clay, Oktibbeha and Noxubee county public schools, said they would reopen for class Wednesday.
Temperatures did not rise beyond the mid to upper 30s in the Golden Triangle, and while most snow and ice evaporated by this evening, some roads remained treacherous as lows expected in the teens began to set in.
The area was under a hard freeze warning and winter wind advisories into Thursday. Forecasters said overnight temperatures would remain below freezing for the remainder of the week before warming into the 40s and 50s by the weekend.
Most public and private schools in the Golden Triangle including Columbus, Heritage Academy, Lowndes County, Starkville, West Point, and schools in Oktibeha and Clay counties, were closed Tuesday. Mississippi State University and Mississippi University for Women were open.
While snow had turned to slush by Monday morning in much of Lowndes, Oktibbeha and Clay counties, many roads remained icy and slick. Farther north, several inches of slushy snow still covered many Mississippi and north Alabama counties.
