JACKSON — The Mississippi Senate has voted to name a segment of highway after a former lawmaker.
Senate Bill 2586 would designate a stretch of U.S. 45 Alternate in Clay County as the Bennie L. Turner Memorial Highway.
The bill passed the Senate on Thursday and moves to the House for more work.
Turner, a Democrat from West Point, served in the state Senate from January 1993 until he died in November 2012 at age 64.
Turner was an attorney and served on the board of the North Mississippi Rural Legal Services in the 1980s. He was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee from 1996 until 2004.
His daughter, Sen. Angela Turner, succeeded him in the Senate in a district that includes parts of Clay, Lowndes, Noxubee and Oktibbeha counties.
