Columbus Mayor Robert Smith is holding a public meeting at 6 p.m. today to discuss the police-involved shooting death of Ricky Ball.
The meeting will update the public on the investigation and give citizens an opportunity to ask questions.
“We want to make sure everybody knows everything we know,” David Armstrong, chief operation officer with the city, told The Dispatch this morning.
The meeting will take place at the gymnasium at the R.E. Hunt Museum & Cultural Center on 20th Street North.
Ball was killed Oct. 16 in north Columbus. An incident report from the shooting states that the 26-year-old pointed a pistol at police officers after he was Tased for resisting arrest.
Three officers with the Columbus Police Department were involved. Each was equipped with a body camera. None of the body cameras were activated prior to or during the shooting.
On Friday, a group of about 100 people marched through north Columbus in support of Ball. Marchers held hand-made signs reading “All Lives Matter,” “Justice for Ricky Ball” and “I Am Ricky Ball.” As they marched, they chanted, “No justice, no peace, no racist police!” and “The people united will never be defeated!” Another march is planned for Tuesday. It will begin at 3 p.m., make its way to the Municipal Complex in time for the 5 p.m. city council meeting and then head to 14th Avenue North, near the spot where Ball was shot. Then a candlelight vigil will be held.
