Kammie Malone grew up sweeping her grandfather’s barbershop in Columbus. Now, with nearly 30 years of experience in the salon industry, she’s designed a way for beauty and salon professionals to get a jumpstart on owning their business ventures.
Second Avenue Suites, 1215 Second Ave. N., will have its ribbon-cutting at 4 p.m. Aug. 28 that’s open to the public.
“This community has always been part of my personal and professional foundation,” Malone said. “This town shaped me, and I wanted to pour back into it.”
Second Avenue has seven suites in total, varying from 10-by-10 to 10-by-21 feet, with flexible lease contracts available for licensed beauty professionals, including haircare, skincare, massage therapy, makeup and more.
“I experienced this business model in (New York City), where I lived for 18 years,” she said. “I like how it provides the professional a less expensive path to a sense of real ownership.”
Those interested in leasing a space can reach Malone on social media or at [email protected].
Also in Columbus, Magnolia Dermatology will have its ribbon-cutting at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Folks can check out the new dermatology clinic and meet the Columbus location’s provider Dr. Anna Woodson, a board-certified dermatologist with more than 13 years of experience. Magnolia Dermatology has four locations, including Clinton, Jackson, Starkville and Columbus.
Saturday, we have Friendly City Books’ second Possomtown Book Fest starting at 9:15 a.m. until late in the afternoon. The book festival features a variety of authors, book signings, panels, children’s events and more. Check out the weekend’s festival at friendlycitybooks.com/fest. If there’s one thing I know for certain, no matter how many books I’ve purchased that I’ve yet to read, I can always have more.
Also in town, it appears that New Chicken Dee, an American and Korean restaurant located 217 Alabama St., is closed. The signage has been removed, and I tried reaching the owner, but was unable to reach her by press time Wednesday. Google has the restaurant listed as permanently closed, the website is no longer active and online orders cannot be taken anymore on food delivery sites.
We’re getting into August, and that means we’re closer and closer to the West Point Prairie Arts Festival, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 30 along Commerce Street and in Sally Kate Winters Park. Rated as one of the South’s “Top 10 Events” since 1979, the festival hosts more than 200 vendors, including arts, handmade crafts, live music and a 5K race.
See y’all next week.
