Moe’s Original BBQ, 110 E. Main St., is officially closed.
The downtown barbecue joint announced its closure online this week, after eight years serving pulled pork, catfish and the best mac-n-cheese I’ve ever had.
“While these past few years have been great, they haven’t been without struggles as well,” the statement on social media said. “We have decided to close ours permanently. … We can’t say thank you enough to everyone. Anyone who has supported us over the years, trusted us with your tailgate food or Thanksgiving dinner. We want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts. While this wasn’t an easy decision by any means, we feel that it’s the right decision to make at this point in time.”
Now as a four-time trivia champion at Moe’s, I’m going to miss the great food and good vibes I’ve spent over the years. As for the mac-n-cheese, there’s a Moe’s in the city up north (much like Voldemort, I refuse to say the actual city). Perhaps I’ll have to get a family platter for Thanksgiving when I head to the Egg Bowl this year at TSUN.
This vacancy downtown will surely not last long, so keep an eye out for an incoming business to take its place.
With bad news, we can always see the good.
A new barbecue restaurant opened earlier this month at 1444 Louisville St.
The owner is quite the familiar face. Former Starkville Police Chief Frank Nichols officially opened Big Chief Barbecue.
Check out Big Chief Thursdays 11:30 a.m. till 3 p.m., Fridays 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m., and Saturdays 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“Big Chief BBQ is the dream of a local kid who grew up and lived in Starkville,” Nichols posted online. “From 1974-1987, I lived less than 1/2 a mile from the new location of Big Chief BBQ. … Grilling has been a passion of mine since my days in the U.S. Navy. I started competition grillin in 2002 after a group of friends and myself got together and decided to enter the rib contest during Super Bulldog Weekend at the Mississippi State University.”
After winning second place in the competition, Nichols has spent years taste testing and perfecting his special Big Chief All Purpose seasoning and homemade barbecue sauce.
Make sure you check out the new restaurant!
Also in Starkville, a new boutique opened this month.
Little Magnolia Gifts and Apparel opened at 87 Cotton Mill Road, Suite 2, the former Hungry Howie’s location. Little Magnolia Gifts and Apparel in Starkville is the company’s second location. The first location opened in Tupelo in 2020. Little Magnolia Gifts and Apparel offers children’s clothing, toys, gifts for moms, and more. You can check out the new boutique Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hours may change based on holiday shopping and sporting events, so be sure to give them a follow on social media for updates and changes.
