By early spring, folks can peruse downtown Columbus and visit a new bakery in a downtown staple.
J. Broussard’s, 210 Fifth St. S., will soon be open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., for all your bread and bakery needs.
Baked, located inside the downtown restaurant, will have croissants, Danishes, alfajores, cinnamon rolls, breads, cupcakes, tarts and more. Chef Beth Broussard Rogers said each delicacy will be made in-house and from scratch. Baked will also sell pimento cheese, chicken salad and take-and-bake entrees.
Rogers added the restaurant is not changing and J. Broussard’s will continue its normal operations with reservations available Tuesday through Saturday.
For Rogers, utilizing the restaurant’s current space and adding an in-house bakery is simply a dream come true.
“I think anyone who knows me even a little is not the least bit surprised we are finally bringing this dream into reality,” Rogers said. “I’ve always loved to bake. … I’m really passionate about good bread, and I spent a good portion of 2020 perfecting the crusty loaf that we now serve with our food each night at the restaurant. I want to be able to share that bread with more people, and opening the bakery is a good way to do that. I’ve always hoped to have a bakery one day, and I’m excited to share my dream with the people of Columbus who have wholeheartedly supported us through the pandemic.”

Moving to Starkville, we’ve got a few new businesses opening.
Elevate Mixology, a traveling bartending service, officially opened on Valentine’s Day.
Pop Porium owner Rosa Dalomba opened Elevate Mixology and said going from popcorn to bartending may seem like a stretch; however, it was actually a smooth transition.
Dalomba started selling popcorn at Mississippi State athletic events a couple years ago. When the university started selling alcohol, her team of popcorn employees grew a reputation for their personality and customer service that tied into their own alcohol sales.
“It just makes sense,” Dalomba said. “Our popcorn is known for its service. After the compliments from customers (at sporting events), I realized I had a niche for customer service skills.”
Thus, Elevate Mixology was formed. Don’t worry folks, The Pop Porium is still popping. Elevate Mixiolgy provides mixologist and bartenders for weddings, games, and other professional events. They provide the bartending service to venues that currently have a liquor license, but alcohol will not be provided by Elevate Mixology.
For Dalomba, she’s excited about traveling, meeting folks and having conversations. It’s about the experience, Dalomba said.
“I just loved it. Bartending is really fun and it fits my background in hospitality,” Dalomba said. “I’m excited to be a part of everyone’s special events and I’m ready to elevate everyone’s experience.”
Though the website won’t be live until next week, be sure to check out elevatemixology.com for more information and booking.
Also in Starkville, Hemp World is opening soon at 911 Hwy 12 W., Suite 205-B.
Before medical marijuana was on the table for Mississippi lawmakers, Deaundrea Delaney suffered with chronic health issues. To help others improve their health, Delaney started selling cannabis-based products, such as CBD, in the Jackson area.
“Hearing Deaundrea’s story of improved health through the use of cannabis products inspired me to want to join this brand in an effort to help others,” Starkville store owner Eboni Delaney said. “I have seen how chronic pain and other illnesses can diminish a person’s quality of life. At Hemp World Starkville, we strive to provide products that will help improve both health and quality of life for our customers.”
Eboni, Deaundrea’s cousin, wanted to expand and add a CBD store option to the Starkville area. The Starkville store does not have an official opening date yet, but you can keep up to date with Hemp World on social media. Once open, folks can find various CBD products such as gummies, pain cream, bath bombs, hair oil, pet treats and more.
