After more than 15 years in Columbus, Beauty Mark is closing its doors.
The beauty store, located at 2322 Hwy. 45., will be completely closed by Oct. 15.
Store manager, Aeta Hwong confirmed the store’s closure to The Dispatch and said it was a “corporate decision.” Now, the closest Beauty Mark will be in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Moving to Main Street, the long-vacant former Atmos building is off the market. Jennette Gholar purchased the building in late July. By November, Gholar intends to reopen her day care facility, Gholar’s Academy, there. She currently has two locations, one on Main Street and one at 14th Street North. Both locations will move to her new building at 1423 Main St.
The Mississippi University for Women graduate first opened her day care in 1997 and said she’s excited for the next big step for Gholar’s Academy.
Moving to the east, Bank of Vernon has officially opened its second branch in Columbus.
Bank of Vernon is located at 420 Alabama St. It features an ATM, night deposit and multiple drive-thru lanes. This year, Bank of Vernon is celebrating its 110th anniversary with locations in Vernon, Caledonia and now two in Columbus.
Over in Starkville, we finally have the long-awaited Smoothie King.
News circulated Starkville as early as 2016 for the Smoothie King location, but nothing came to fruition for years. Now, just across from Middleton Court shopping center, the new smoothie shop is open and ready for business at 208 Hwy. 12.
Starkville’s location will mark the only Smoothie King in the Golden Triangle area, accompanying more than 1,300 franchise stores worldwide.
Swing by the new Smoothie King and check it out Monday through Friday 7 a.m.-9 a.m., Saturday 8 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-8 p.m.
Also, on Main Street, we have a new glasses shop.
Mississippi Eyewear Starkville, 116 E. Main St., opened earlier this month.
Tabitha Stewart, director of retail operations, said this is Mississippi Eyecare’s ninth location but first retail-only shop for designer eyewear.
“We’re trying to carry a lot of sunglasses and regular frames,” Stewart said. “Some of the brands and designers are ones that you can’t really get down here. They are really high quality, we are carrying accessories also.”
Mississippi Eyewear is open Monday through Saturday 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. The downtown shop is also open on Sundays during Mississippi State University home football games for a “brunch and browse” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“We’re off to a great start,” Stewart said. “We’ve had comments from people downtown and in the community that are just excited that something like this is open in Starkville. … We’re not just sunglasses, you can bring in your prescription too. Just come by and check us out and we’ll be glad to see (you).”
