A Columbus man has been arrested for the murder of a man whose body was discovered on Burns Road earlier this month.
Donta Terrell Kirby, 36, of Lehmberg Road, has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, according to a Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office press release. Kirby is accused in the death of Lorenzo K. Halthon, Jr., 28.
Halthon’s body was discovered early the morning of July 2 after a driver in a passing vehicle spotted him in a ditch off Burns Road north of Columbus. According to the LCSO press release, investigators identified Kirby as a suspect within a few days, and he was formally charged Wednesday.
Kirby had been held in Webster County Jail on separate charges since July 9, when Mississippi Highway Patrol agents pulled over a vehicle Kirby was driving. Kirby attempted to run away on foot but was captured.
He was transferred to Lowndes County Adult Detention Center Monday, where he is currently in custody. His bond was set at $500,000.
