STARKVILLE – A Starkville man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly setting a trailer on fire while someone was still inside.
Corey Reed Westmoreland, 48, was arrested Monday and charged with attempted murder and arson, a press release from the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office said.
At about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, deputies responded to Craig Springs Road to assist volunteer fire department personnel with a residential fire. County fire investigators and state fire marshals also responded to the scene and determined the fire was deliberately set after an initial investigation.
Further investigation led to the arrest of Westmoreland. Capt. Brett Watson told The Dispatch the incident escalated from a domestic violence situation. He would not say how investigators determined the fire was intentional.
Westmoreland was released from Oktibbeha County Jail Tuesday after paying a $30,000 bond.
