A shotgun-and-pistol-packing Columbus man is behind bars after allegedly shooting a gun in the city limits and then assaulting an officer, according to a press release from the Columbus Police Department.
According to the release, a few minutes past noon on Monday CPD officers responded to the area of Short Main Street and 21st Street South for a report of shots being fired.
They arrived to find LaQuin Richardson, 41, of Columbus. Richardson was allegedly armed with a shotgun, a pistol and two knives, and was wearing a bulletproof vest.
Officers determined Richardson had fired at least one shot from one of his weapons and attempted to take him into custody. A struggle ensued, in which an officer was injured.
No other injuries or damage were reported.
Richardson is charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and discharging a firearm in the city limits.
Public Information Officer Joe Dillon told The Dispatch Thursday afternoon the officer received medical treatment and is back at work.
Richardson was still in custody at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center as of press time.
