A Columbus man accused of stabbing his mother was caught after fleeing across state lines.
Ricky Sanders, 30, was arrested by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office deputies in Alabama on Thursday morning, according to the FCSO website.
Columbus Police Department Public Information Officer Bryan Moore said the attack happened at about 3 a.m. in the 1500 block of Third Avenue North in Columbus.
Sanders allegedly stabbed his mother in the neck and shoulder before kicking her repeatedly in the face. The attack, Moore said, broke the victim’s jaw and caused a brain bleed. Sanders then allegedly stole his mother’s purse and her car.
Sanders fled across state lines, but he ended up wrecking in Alabama. Then, he allegedly stole an Alabama Department of Transportation vehicle. Deputies with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office pursued him, Moore said.
When the sheriff’s office finally stopped him, Sanders allegedly tried to fight the deputies. When he was finally arrested, he also had fentanyl in his possession, leading to additional charges, Moore said.
The FCSO website lists Sanders as being charged with theft of property, resisting arrest, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, trafficking of fentanyl, attempting to elude a police officer, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and leaving the scene of an accident.
Moore said CPD is charging Sanders with aggravated domestic violence. The victim was airlifted to a hospital in Jackson due to the severity of her injuries.
As of press time Friday, Sanders was being held at the Fayette County Jail, Moore said. Despite requests from The Dispatch, a booking photo was not made available by press time.
