Neil Waggoner of JBHM Architects updated the Lowndes County School District Board of Trustees Friday on the district’s various bond projects.
Dirt work and foundation preparation are in progress for the $11 million career technology and education center, which is scheduled for completion in November 2017, Waggoner said.
The career tech center being built on Lehmberg Road will offer classes in technical skills, from welding and engineering skills to culinary skills and more. Students attending classes at the center will commute to and from their home high school during the school day.
Construction at New Hope High School should also be completed by November 2017, Waggoner said at Friday’s meeting. Workers are also in the process of laying the foundation at that site.
In the more immediate future, the new building for Caledonia Elementary School is on schedule to be complete by October, while the $1.8 million football field house for Caledonia High School is scheduled for substantial completion Sept. 19 — hopefully in time for homecoming, Waggoner said.
The $740,000 projects to create a new weight room at West Lowndes High School and make some additions and renovations to West Lowndes Elementary School are substantially complete, he added.
The projects are all part of a construction plan covered by a $44 million bond issue Lowndes County residents voted for last year.
New grading scale discussions
At Friday’s meeting, the board also voted to table a decision to upgrade the district’s grading policy.
Students in dual enrollment classes — classes where they receive both high school and college credit — are graded on a four-point scale, Assistant Superintendent Robin Ballard said at the meeting. The upgraded policy would place Lowndes dual enrollment students on a five-point scale.
Advanced Placement students are already graded on a five-point scale, as are many AP and dual enrollment students from other districts, Ballard said.
“They just get a little extra bump and more scholarship opportunities,” Ballard said.
