Longtime Lowndes County District 1 Constable Willie “Hoot” West is recovering from a single-car accident Monday morning.
Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office investigator Brent Swan said deputies responded to the accident scene on Harrison Road near Highway 50 at 7:52 a.m.
West’s car left the roadway at the bend of a curve and struck a tree. West, 83, was taken first to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, then to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
An NMMC spokesperson said West was in “good” condition Monday afternoon.
West, a lifelong Caledonia resident, was first elected District 1 constable, which servers the Caledonia area, in 1967. He has been re-elected 12 times and is in his 52nd year in the job.
West did not file paperwork to run again this year.
