Three men from Laurel were arrested Sunday for attempting to break into a UPS warehouse.
Demarcus Devonte Newell, 30, Leonard Charles Hayes, 30, and Antonio M. Drummond, 37, were arrested early Sunday morning according to a release from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office. They are all charged with burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary.
Security personnel at the 1379 Industrial Park Road UPS facility called police to the scene after noticing the three inside the building on security cameras. They were still inside when deputies arrived on the scene to confront them. A brief foot chase ensued before all three were apprehended.
No injuries resulted from the incident, Sheriff Eddie Hawkins confirmed Monday.
Hawkins said the three men are suspected to be involved with a rash of roughly 20 similar robberies targeting UPS facilities across Mississippi and Louisiana. The sheriff’s office has been working with both state and federal law enforcement as part of the investigation.
The investigation is ongoing according to the release, and more charges are expected. Hawkins said the sheriff’s office isn’t sure whether the three men arrested on-site were acting alone or had accomplices elsewhere.
“At this point we don’t know,” he said. “We have three in custody who were on scene when deputies arrived. At this point we don’t know whether there’s anybody else involved or not.”
The men are being held in the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center on a bond of $75,000 each, $50,000 for burglary and $25,000 for conspiracy.
