The race for sheriff continues to be active, if not one-sided, as far fundraising goes, with incumbent Republican Eddie Hawkins handily outraising Democratic challenger Willie Jones. Hawkins outraised Jones by a little more than $1,000 during the month of July, but in overall contributions leads by more than $30,000.
Hawkins reported raising $3,248 during the month of July, of which $1,550 was itemized. Donors include $500 from Express Mart of Columbus Inc.; $300 from Bill Russell; and $250 each from Mrs. Billy Swedenburg, David H. Beard and McBride Inc. He reported spending $3,514.
Candidates in state and local races must file periodic campaign finance reports and itemize contributions or expenditures of $200 or greater.
Hawkins reports raising a total of $38,945 and has $11,334 in cash on hand.
Democrat challenger Willie Jones reported raising $2,200 in non-itemized contributions, and spending $1,845. He has raised a total of $8,460, and has $486 in cash on hand.
District 1 supervisor
Michael Brock reported no contributions during the reporting period and $300 in expenditures. He has raised a total of $1,425, and reported a cash balance of negative-$4,695.
Kevin Clark did not timely file a report.
Matt Furnari reported no fundraising, and expenditures of $230 during the period. Overall, he reports no fundraising and a cash balance of negative-$3,465.
All three are running as Republicans.
The winner will face Democrat Tommy Lee Kidd, who did not file a timely report.
District 2 supervisor
Incumbent Trip Hairston reported $1,750 in non-itemized contributions during the reporting period, as well as $1,995 in expenditures. He has raised a total of $5,831 to date, and has $763 cash on hand.
Challenger Brad Holliman reported no fundraising and 1,801 in expenditures. He reported total fundraising of $0, with no cash on hand.
Both are running as Republicans, and the race will be decided Tuesday.
District 3 supervisor
Chad Frasher reported $700 in non-itemized contributions and $900 in spending during the reporting period. He reported raising a total of $700, and reports negative-$3,524 cash on hand.
Tony Hannah reported raising $200 in non-itemized contributions, and spending $550. He has raised a total of $1,700, and reports no cash on hand.
Andy Williamson did not file a report by the deadline.
All three are running as Republicans.
The winner will face independent Christopher Moore. He did not file a report by the deadline.
District 4 supervisor
Herman Phillips reported $135 in contributions, all of which came out of his own pocket. He reported no expenditures and no cash on hand.
Anthony Sanders and incumbent Jeff Smith did not file reports by the deadline.
All three are running as Democrats.
District 5 supervisor
Neither incumbent Democrat Leroy Brooks nor Independent challenger Tiffany Turner filed reports by the deadline.
District 3 Justice Court judge
James E. Gunter reported raising $300, which came out of his own pocket, and spending $255. To date he has raised a total of $5,000, and reports having $123 cash on hand.
Joseph Mickens did not file a report by the deadline.
Incumbent Peggy Phillips reported no contributions and no expenditures. She has reported no fundraising.
All three are running as Democrats.
Chancery Clerk
Incumbent Republican Cindy Goode reported raising $500 in the last period. She got donations of $250 each from Sue Fairbanks and W. Michael Kuss. She reported spending $50.
Goode has raised a total of $3,396, and reports $1,278 in cash on hand.
Democrat challenger Andre Deforest Roberts did not file a report by the deadline.
Tax collector
Maci Griffin did not timely file a report.
Diane Whaley Stephens reported no contributions and $1,576 in expenditures. She has reported no fundraising thus far, and reports no cash on hand.
Kalee Talley reported $1,899 in contributions, of which $750 was itemized. Bruce Sansing gave $750. She reported $2,905 in expenditures. Talley has reported raising a total of $4,466, and reports no cash on hand.
All three are running as Republicans, and whoever wins the primary wins the office.
Coroner
Incumbent Republican Greg Merchant reported no contributions during the reporting period and $3,237 in expenditures. He has raised a total of $800, and reports having no cash on hand.
Democrat challenger Leonard Williams Jr. did not file a report by the deadline.
District Attorney
Republican challenger Jase Dalrymple reported $800 in non-itemized expenditures, and $3,618 in expenditures. He has raised a total of $21,620 and has $17,774 in cash on hand.
Chuck Easley, also running as a Republican, reported $4,775 in disbursements but no fundraising and no cash on hand.
Democrat incumbent Scott Colom did not have to file a report because he is unopposed in the primary.
District 41 House of Representatives
Democrat incumbent Kabir Karriem reported $750 in contributions, all of it from Jackson-based ENPAC. He reported spending $174 and has $4,103 in cash on hand.
His opponent, Libertarian Claude Simpson, is not fundraising.
