Well, y’all, there’s nothing quite like some classic Mexican cuisine to remind me of my own Texan roots. I did grow up on the stuff, after all.
That said, I’m happy to report that La Frontera Mexican Grill, a brand new restaurant, opened Wednesday in the former Farmstead Restaurant at 142 S. McCrary Road.
Owner Martin Tomas told me he and his crew thought Columbus was the right fit for the new restaurant and began renovating the space in June.
“We are just excited to open today because we’ve been working on this place for more than three months,” Tomas said. “We wanted to open earlier, but some of the paperwork took longer than we thought.”
Tomas said the project wrapped up just a few weeks ago and the business is now in full swing. Restaurant hours are Monday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. I am a huge fan of the chicken torta.
But Columbus isn’t the only town getting its flavor on this week.
Starkville businesses TBT Butcher Shop and the Old Main Mercantile have decided to team up and combine locations at 201 Academy Road, Old Main Mercantile owner Seth O’Nan said.
O’Nan said he and his team were looking for ways to add food items and fresh meat to the home and kitchen retail business. After a discussion with Artie Sutherland, co-owner of the butcher shop, both companies agreed for the butcher shop to move in with the home goods store.
“I started playing around with the idea of doing steaks and bringing in some freezers and doing some stuff for the grill and things like that,” O’Nan said. “My partner already went and had a conversation with TBT, and I think literally in 48 hours, we had come to an agreement on what to do.”
O’Nan said Sutherland’s team has been moving coolers in and setting up shop while also making slight renovations for a kitchen area to sell cooked items. He expects the butcher shop will reopen by Saturday.
Moving back to Columbus, Friday is everyone’s last chance to chuck an axe at a wall at Twin States Axe House, located at 454 Wilkins-Wise Road.
Co-owner Chris Pike said the business, which opened in summer 2022, will close this Friday after just a year in business.
“I think a lot of people didn’t know we were there even though we advertised a lot,” Pike said. “That lack of business is what was causing us to close.”
For those interested in giving it a swing before they close the doors, the business will be open Friday from 7 p.m. to midnight.
Finally, my friends, Factory Direct Home Furnishings, located at 996 Gardner Blvd., closes Thursday and owner Eric Thomas said he still has a few furniture sets left for people to grab serious deals on.
Thomas said he decided to close the store to take some time off for health reasons. However, he said he will consider reopening the store later this year.
“Once I start to get a little better, I might get back into it,” he said. “I hate that I have to close the doors because I love my customers, I love people and being around folks.”
For now, he said anyone interested in grabbing up the last of his goods can show up to the store.
Thursday afternoon or call the store directly for details on end-of-business deals.
Here is wishing him well and, hopefully, seeing him turn that open sign back on one day.
Well, folks, that’s all for now. Make sure to check back in next week for more goings on in business.
