Like many things in life, we hand unto others what we love. The same can also be said for businesses.
With that in mind, Bob Wiygul, founder of Bob Roberts BBQ at 599 W. Lowndes Drive, has sold the restaurant to Jason Brock.
Brock told me he had been negotiating with Wiygul to purchase the business since September and closed on the deal on Sept. 28. He reopened the barbeque restaurant Tuesday, sporting a new name, Davey Jay’s BBQ.
Brock said that besides the name, he intends to keep the business exactly as it has been since opening in 2011, complete with classic barbeque, including some of my favorites, such as the pulled pork and smoked chicken platters.
“We’re probably just gonna maintain the status quo until I get in here and kind of get my feet set a little more and see how things are going,” Brock said. “I don’t really have any intentions on changing a whole lot. I’m a cook at heart myself, so I’ll have little menu specials and tweaks, but for the most part, our menu will stay fairly the same as what it was.”
But Brock isn’t the only one working his way into some new digs.
In West Point, TBT Butcher Shop and Seafood Market owner Artie Sutherland said he and his team have completed a three-month-long renovation at its new location in the former Hoover’s Bakery at 58 Hwy. 45 N., and hopes to open Friday or Saturday.
“Now we’re just waiting on our inspection,” Sutherland said. “Hopefully we’ll have that by Friday and be able to open within a couple hours of getting the certification.”
Sutherland said once he works out the kinks at the new space, he also plans to add a dinner service and unique menu to expand the business as well. I personally can’t wait to grab some fresh steaks on my way up to Oxford every other weekend to watch some Ole Miss football, but that’s just me.
“Once we get the kitchen up and running and staffed and everybody’s comfortable, then we’ll open up for dinner,” he said. “The dinner menu will feature some of our steamed products and seafood and all the fun stuff. It’ll be a little higher end for dinner.”
Hours for the shop will be Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Moving to Caledonia, 740 Coffee Company, a brand new cafe at 737 Main St., is waiting on its final inspection before opening.
Owner James White said he and his team have been renovating the cafe since the summer by repainting, knocking down a few walls and setting up two bar areas for customers to enjoy a more open floor plan.
“I’m hopeful (the inspection) will be at some point this week, but I’m not exactly sure,” White said. “We will open as soon as we get the clear.”
With most of the work complete and the open sign ready to turn on, White recommends people stop by and give the coffee a try. I hear the white chocolate mocha is something to talk about, and don’t forget about the baked goods, which include one of my personal favorites, coffee cake.
Finally, my friends, we move to Columbus for one last update.
Dispatch Publisher Peter Imes said the buildout to expand Friendly City Mini Warehouse’s location on Highway 45 North near the Columbus Air Force Base has been completed.
The company began the project in May and has now added 150 storage units, with 112 of them featuring climate control. New units will come available on Thursday.
Well, my friends, that’s all for now. Make sure to check back in next week for more goings on in business.
