A former Mississippi University for Women police officer was arrested Thursday for allegedly stealing more than $1,000 in equipment from his former employer.
Michael Mellott, 48, has been charged with one felony account of embezzlement, Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said.
Mellott is accused of stealing a bulletproof vest, a badge and a handheld radio, an LCSO press release said.
Mellott resigned from his position at MUW about a month ago and was recently hired as a corrections officer at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center, Hawkins said.
The sheriff’s office found out about the stolen equipment Wednesday and notified MUW, Hawkins said. Mellott was arrested the next day.
Mellott is being held in Lowndes County Adult Detention Center with bond set at $10,000.
