MAYHEW — East Mississippi Community College’s marketing students are looking for local performers to compete in StarStruck, an annual talent competition celebrating its third anniversary. The show is set for Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at Cowbells Sports Grill in Starkville.
The deadline to enter is Oct. 28.
The contest will be judged by local industry professionals, who will select the top three performances. This year, winners will receive cash prizes in the form of pre-paid Visa cards. First place will take $125. Second place will take $75 and third place will take $50.
Jay Bradley, co-owner of Cowbells, is a graduate of EMCC’s Business and Marketing Management program. He generously offered to host the StarStruck competition at Cowbells this year.
“I’ve been a judge for this event for the last two years, when it was held on the EMCC campus,” Bradley said. “I wanted to help current students develop this event into something the entire Golden Triangle would come to anticipate each year.”
EMCC marketing instructor Lori Smith said the contest is an opportunity for both local performers and her students.
“We wanted to bring together some of the untouched, undiscovered talent here in the Golden Triangle, expose them to the public and create opportunity for them to expand their talent,” Smith said. “Beyond public and media exposure, competitors also have a chance to connect to a recruiting network of industry pros looking for talent, and talent looking to break into the industry.”
Sophomore marketing student Anna Smith said the event marketing class is planning the contest not only as a learning experience, but also as a fundraiser.
“We have several students who will be attending our state competition in Jackson and the International Leadership Conference in the Salt Lake City, Utah, in the spring,” Anna Smith said. “Several of the students also hope to go on a trip to New York City, where they will meet and talk with industry leaders in areas ranging from sports and entertainment marketing to finance and international marketing.”
