An elderly woman was injured Friday afternoon in a house fire in northern Lowndes County.
Lowndes County Fire Coordinator Neal Austin told The Dispatch Saturday the fire started at about 2:30 p.m. at the woman’s home on Spurline Road.
Austin said the fire appears to have been accidental and to have started on the back porch before it came into the house. The woman could not get out of the house by herself, he said, but some passersby helped her to escape before firefighters arrived.
Firefighters from District 1, District 2 and Columbus Air Force Base responded to the fire, Austin said.
Austin said the woman was brought to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle for her injuries.
The house sustained major damage from the fire, Austin said, along with smoke and water damage.
