The 2025 Lowndes County Spelling Bee was held Thursday at the Nissan Auditorium in Parkinson Hall at the Mississippi University for Women. The event was hosted by Lowndes County School District, sponsored by the CLCC Education Committee, Edward Jones | Josh Read and included generous donations from Chick-Fil-A, Friendly City Books and The Columbus Spouses’ Club.
All schools in the area that serve third through eighth grades were invited to participate in the competition. Each registered school holds a qualifying event and sends two students to the district bee. There were 31 students competing Thursday. Schools and districts represented were Annunciation Catholic School, Columbus Christian Academy, Columbus Municipal School District, Heritage Academy, and Lowndes County School District.
Heritage Academy eighth-grader Mira Alnas won the championship trophy. New Hope Middle School sixth-grader Aiden Ferguson was awarded first runner-up. Sixth-grader Adalyn Adams, also from NHMS, won second runner-up. Along with trophies, each of the students received a dictionary and gift card from Friendly City Books.
Alnas, Ferguson and Adams will represent the Lowndes district in the state spelling bee online during semifinals Feb. 11 and 12. The Mississippi State Spelling Bee is March 21 and 22.
