A Columbus man is behind bars after allegedly hitting and killing two people on a motorcycle in an accident early Sunday morning.
Tavaris L. Mosley, 42, of Columbus has been charged with one count of driving under the influence and two counts of DUI-vehicular manslaughter after he hit the Harley Davidson about 1 a.m.
Merchant identified the victims as David A. Porter, 26, and Zabria D. Dodds, 24, both of Columbus.
Dodds was pregnant, Merchant said. Porter is the stepson of a Dispatch employee.
Porter was driving the motorcycle and Dodds was a passenger, Merchant said. Both were pronounced dead on the scene.
According to the Columbus Police Department’s accident report, they, along with a second Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Anthony Billups, 50, of Columbus, were traveling west on Highway 82. Mosley hit Porter’s bike from behind, and Billups apparently hit Porter’s bike where it lay in the roadway.
Mosley told officers he was driving west when “all of a sudden he saw some red lights, and that’s the last thing he remembered.”
Billups was taken by ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle with serious injuries.
Authorities said the investigation is still active and more charges are possible.
