STARKVILLE — A Dispatch newspaper carrier who was seriously injured in an early December accident died this weekend in Jackson, according to a long-time friend and fellow carrier.
Winston Minor died Sunday morning at University of Mississippi Medical Center, said Mary Tallent, who has been in close touch with Minor”s family since the accident Dec. 6 at Highway 182 and Highway 82, just east of Starkville. Over the past few weeks, Minor”s condition improved slightly, Tallent said, as “he did regain consciousness and he was aware of everything.”
Minor couldn”t talk, but he could “motion and make signs,” Tallent said.
“He understood what was going on,” she said.
But Minor went into cardiac arrest last week and his heart stopped Sunday, Tallent said.
“His heart just stopped and they couldn”t get it to start back,” she said.
Minor”s family was scheduled to meet today with Welch”s Funeral Home in Starkville to set a funeral date and time. Minor will be buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Ala., Tallent said.
Minor and his German Shepherd, Abigail, were attempting to cross Highway 182 after coming down the Highway 82 off-ramp Dec. 6 when Minor”s 2003 Ford Explorer was broadsided by a westbound tractor-trailer. Abigail was slightly injured in the accident and is now working with a trainer, Tallent said.
Minor is an independent contractor who has delivered newspapers for The Dispatch off and on for nearly 30 years. He contracted with The Dispatch in 1982, then left in 1996 and went to work for Starkville Daily News. He returned to The Dispatch in 2001.
