Authorities this morning still were reticent to release additional details in Monday”s fatal wreck on Highway 45 North in Columbus.
The wreck, in which a Columbus Air Force Base airman driving a motorcycle collided with the rear of a dump truck, took the life of the airman. Authorities have not yet released the name of the airman.
CAFB policy calls for details in such an incident to be held until 24 hours after the family is notified. Mississippi Highway Patrol also has agreed to honor CAFB policy.
Family members were notified at about 10 p.m. Monday. However, calls to CAFB PA and the MHP were not immediately returned this morning.

The wreck happened at about 12:30 p.m. Monday one mile south of the base near the intersection of Highway 45 North and Mike Parra Road, according to a CAFB press release. The airman reportedly was traveling at a high rate of speed when he struck the dump truck, which had slowed to turn into MMC Materials at 7296 Highway 45 N.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant pronounced the victim dead at the scene, as a result of massive blunt force trauma.
