The Columbus Police Department is offering a program for locals interested in learning about the inner workings of law enforcement.
The Citizen’s Police Academy is a “look into values, operations and philosophies” at the police department, according to Chief Tony Carleton.
The eight week long course has a curriculum consisting of citizen and officer safety, becoming a good witness, crime scene investigations, defense and tactical training, ethics and professionalism, police operations, radio communications, report writing, tactical communications and weapons training.
“The classes will educate the participants about the department’s hows and whys and the citizen’s role in the Community Oriented Policing Philosophy,” Carleton said. “This will also give the participants a realistic view of the Columbus Police Department and to help improve the relationship between officers and the citizens in our community.”
Instructors for the class will be officers, dispatchers, detectives and crime scene technicians. The classes begin Oct. 21 and meet every Tuesday at the department from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost is $75.
Carleton said the goal of the academy is to promote understanding and unity.
“Overall results will be a clearer understanding of what officers can provide for the community that supports them and what the community can expect from officers who serve them,” he said.
Those interested in the class should contact Officer Raymond Hackler at 662-251-3300.
