The Columbus Police Department’s Special Response Team responded to a hostage situation late Tuesday at Apostolic Drive in Clay County.
Columbus Chief of Police Selvain McQueen said the SRT unit arrived at the residence and discovered two men barricaded inside the home. The men were believed to be suspects in a shooting that occurred earlier in the northern part of West Point that left one man critically injured.
While details are still unclear, there were two hostages inside the home, a woman and her young child. The two reportedly locked themselves in a bedroom and escaped through a window.
McQueen said there were numerous law enforcement agencies on scene for the three-hour standoff.
McQueen said the SRT team tried to negotiate with the suspects to no avail before breaching the door and deploying tear gas. The subjects were then taken into custody.
McQueen called the night’s event a successful raid.
“We did what we needed to do,” he said.
