The Columbus Municipal School District Board has reversed course on the matter of legal council, voting to renew its contract with Board Attorney David Dunn for three more years. Two weeks earlier, the board voted 3-2 not to renew Dunn’s contract, which would have expired in June.
Board members Currie Fisher, Aubra Turner and Jason Spears had advocated soliciting bids from other attorneys so they could make a cost-comparison despite Board President Tommy Prude’s argument that, by doing so, the board could find itself at a critical juncture without an attorney.
Because legal counsel is a professional service, the board isn’t required to advertise the position, but Prude had argued that there would not be enough time to find a new attorney before Dunn’s contract ended in June.
With the naming of a new superintendent imminent, Prude said he felt it was important to settle the matter quickly. The Board approved Dunn’s extension on Saturday.
Dunn’s new contract will expire June 2015. He has served more than 20 years as the board’s attorney.
