A Columbus man shot during an attempted robbery early last week has died.
Freddie Edward Robinson, 25, died Monday afternoon at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, according to Greg Merchant, coroner for Lowndes County. Merchant told The Dispatch this morning that an autopsy is scheduled to take place Wednesday.
Robinson, authorities say, was one of six people at a residence in the 800 block of 10th Avenue South on Jan. 11. He was shot in the back about 10 p.m. after five or six men entered and demanded money from the occupants, according to Fred Shelton, the interim chief of police with CPD.
Shelton told The Dispatch that the Jan. 11 gathering was focused around watching the college football national championship game between the University of Alabama and Clemson University.
“The motive in that was robbery, because they thought they had a big, large money pool from the bet from the game,” Shelton said.
Robinson was initially taken to Baptist Memorial-Hospital-Golden Triangle before being airlifted to the Tupelo hospital.
No arrest has been made in the case. It remains under investigation.
