City police charged a Columbus man with burglary of a commercial building after he was found at the scene.
Police said someone attempted to break into Atmos Energy at 1423 Main St. next door to the Columbus Police Department at 12:24 a.m. Sunday. Anthony Gaige Handley, 19, of 901 Gatlin Road is charged in the incident.
“He was caught in the act,” interim Columbus Police Chief Selvain McQueen said, noting he also was charged with disorderly conduct.
According to arrest reports, his bond is set at $400, and the court date has not been set.
Stacey Taylor Cuevas, 23, of 8543 Highway 45 N. in Columbus, also was arrested at the scene on charges of public intoxication, disobeying a police officer and false information.
“(Cuevas) was in the area with this guy. So they charged her, and they were arrested at the same time,” McQueen said, noting Cuevas’ involvement is unknown.
In other news, police:
- Arrested Antonio Cortez Roland, 26, of 910 Waterworks Road in Columbus; Tyrone Deandre Cowson, 25, of 505 Peach St. in Columbus; and Ronnie Lewis Mixon Jr., 25, of 2212 Fourth Ave. S in Columbus, in connection with a Nov. 2 robbery. The incident took place at the 2200 block of Third Ave. S.,and the arrests were made earlier this month.
The complainant was an 85-year-old man who lives where the incident took place. Police said he was walking to the front of his house about to unlock his front door when three men walked up to him, took his walking cane, and took his wallet from his pocket. Police said “an undetermined amount of money” stolen.
Cowson’s bond is set at $25,000, Mixon Jr.’s bond is set at $2,500 and Roland’s bond is set at $5,000. Cowson’s court date is set for Dec. 15, and Roland and Mixon’s court dates are both set for Jan. 5.
- Arrested Joshua Calando Jones, 24, of 1704 23rd St. N. in Columbus, on a charge of burglary of a commercial building in connection with an attempt to steal scrap metal from Holman Transmission at 1503 Gardner Blvd. The incident occurred at 5:33 a.m. Tuesday. Jones’ bond is set at $7,500, and his court date is set for Jan. 5.
