A prominent local attorney and Columbus drug court judge is facing an Aug. 26 court date after she was arrested last month on a misdemeanor charge.
Nicole Clinkscales, 34, of 607 North Gaywood Ave. in Columbus, was arrested near her residence June 23 by the Columbus Police Department and charged with one misdemeanor count of failure to obey a police officer.
Although Clinkscales was scheduled to appear in Columbus Municipal Court July 8, her court date was continued until Aug. 26 at 1:30 p.m.
Because the most recent session of the Clay County Circuit Court began July 6, and because the next session of the Lowndes County Circuit Court is scheduled to begin Aug. 17, Clinkscales” court date was scheduled for late next month, explained CPD Capt. Fred Shelton.
“She is a court-appointed attorney for Circuit Court, so they scheduled her (municipal) court date around that,” Shelton said.
Clinkscales” arrest came after a complainant called 911 to report the attorney was “beating her son with a belt” at the her residence, according to a CPD report.
Before the officer reached Clinkscales” residence, the caller flagged down the officer near 412 East Gaywood Ave., and attempted to explain the situation to the officer. However, Clinkscales approached the officer and the caller and began screaming at them, the CPD report read.
“Clinkscales was told several times (by the officer) to calm down, but refused,” Shelton wrote in the report. “She was again told by the officer to calm down and get in her car. She refused again and was arrested for failure to obey a police officer.”
After Clinkscales was arrested, the complainant told the officer she witnessed Clinkscales striking the suspect”s son with a belt. The caller told the officer she thought Clinkscales had gotten “out of control” with the beating, and asked the suspect to stop.
The caller then left Clinkscales” residence, but was followed by the suspect before intercepting the officer.
“Clinkscales” son is a juvenile, and refused to give any personal information about himself to the officer,” Shelton wrote in the release. “But he did state that his mother was upset about some damage that had been done to the house.”
