A child is recovering from a gunshot wound after being saved Monday by police, according to a Columbus Police Department press release.
Public Information Officer Bryan Moore said he and Chief Joseph Daughtry responded at about 3:50 p.m. to a call involving a gunshot victim at the intersection of Eighth Avenue North and 15th Street North.
At the scene, an 8-year-old child was suffering what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the hand and leg, the press release said.
Moore said he applied a tourniquet to stop bleeding from the wound before the child was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. The child was then airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.
Moore was uncertain of the child’s condition Tuesday, and wasn’t clear on whether the gunshot was accidental.
Daughtry did not respond to The Dispatch by press time.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact CPD at (662) 244-3500 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151.
