Police are investigating two unrelated shootings since Monday afternoon in Columbus, the second of which occurred during a late-night car chase in Southside.
At about midnight, the second shooting victim was driving down Seventh Street South followed by a black, four-door sedan, Columbus Police Chief Fred Shelton said. A person in the pursuing car was shooting at the lead vehicle. After the driver of the lead vehicle was hit with a bullet, Shelton said, he crashed near the intersection of Fifth Avenue South.
“(His injuries) were serious enough to be transferred out to (an out-of-town) hospital,” Shelton said.
Shelton said there were four people — one man and three women — in the car with the shooter. The victim’s car also had three female passengers who were uninjured in the crash.
Another shooting occurred at about 4:30 p.m. Monday at Country Air Apartments on Lehmberg Road, Shelton said. The suspect and victim were gone by the time officers arrived at the complex, but authorities later received a call that a gunshot victim had been taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle for treatment.
That victim underwent surgery, Shelton said, but his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
Shelton said investigators are still searching for suspects in both shootings, and asked anyone with information about them to contact Columbus Police Department at 662-244-3500 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at 800-530-7151.
