A Caledonia teenager faces adult felony charges, some stemming from a viral social media video where he is seen holding another teenager at gunpoint.
A Lowndes County grand jury indicted Jayden Rager, 16, for aggravated assault and kidnapping related to the actions depicted in the video, according to a Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office press release issued Wednesday.
Rager was also indicted for sexual battery of a girl younger than 14, 16th Circuit Assistant District Attorney Ben Lang told The Dispatch.
The sheriff’s office arrested Rager on Aug. 3 for simple assault, a misdemeanor bound for juvenile court, after he recorded a video of a confrontation with 13-year-old Jaryan Cox that was later posted to Facebook.
In the video, the suspect, who is white, threatens Cox, who is Black, at gunpoint. The suspect points a gun at the victim and accuses him of talking to “his girl,” while using racial slurs and forcing him to do jumping jacks. The suspect appears to hit the victim on the head with the barrel of the gun before ordering him to run home.
Cox’s family, particularly his mother Joscia Shinn, called the misdemeanor charge a “slap on the wrist.” Relatives and friends of the victim demonstrated on the courthouse lawn Aug. 9 demanding justice and an upgrade to the charges.
Scott Colom, district attorney for the 16th Circuit, agreed to present the case to a grand jury.
“There ain’t much to talk about, as far as the facts. It’s on video. It’s just identifying the two people,” Colom told The Dispatch on Wednesday. “It’s such a visceral reaction to seeing it. I’m sure that played a part in anyone’s view of those charges. I mean, it’s very upsetting. … I think it’s just a little bit of patience. … I think, too often, it’s like instant satisfaction, and that’s not the way the criminal justice system works. Even now, it ain’t over. He’s got a right to a defense. Everybody has due process.”
Shinn did not respond to a call or message from The Dispatch on Wednesday seeking comment.
Rager is being held in Lowndes County Adult Detention Center awaiting his first court appearance. No bond has been set.
