CALEDONIA — A fire Saturday morning claimed the life of a man in his mobile home on Stanley Road.
The victim is identified as Gerald Michael Whitney, 69, according to a text message from Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant. Investigators believe the fire started from a small heater in the home’s bedroom.
A passerby called 911 at about 6:33 a.m. after seeing smoke from the mobile home, Merchant said. By the time county volunteer firefighters arrived, the home was fully involved. Firefighters found Whitney’s body after putting out the blaze.
The state fire marshal arrived at the scene Saturday afternoon, Merchant said, and more details are expected at a later date.
