Columbus Air Force Base, along with air bases around the nation, raised its security alert status Tuesday as a precautionary measure in response to the approaching 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people.
Security measures at all Department of Defense installations were raised by U.S. Northern Command from “Force Protection Alpha” to “Force Protection Bravo” even though White House officials have indicated no specific terror threats have been made against the country.
Likewise, security has been tightened at U.S. airports, government buildings, mass-transit stations and other unspecified areas throughout the nation.
CAFB officials said all visitors to the base should be prepared for potential delays at the gates.
“For safety and security reasons, Columbus airmen are advised to remain vigilant, especially during this significant anniversary,” a CAFB official said in an emailed statement.
