Details regarding a fatal accident that killed a Columbus Air Force Base airman about 12:30 p.m. Monday will be released late this evening.
The airman”s family was notified of his death at 10 p.m. Monday night, according to CAFB Public Affairs. A standard 24-hour period will be observed before further details on the accident are released.
The wreck happened about one mile south of the base near the intersection of Highway 45 North and Mike Parra Road, according to a CAFB press release. The airman reportedly was traveling at a high rate of speed when he struck the rear of a dump truck, which had slowed to turn into MMC Materials at 7296 Highway 45 N.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant pronounced the victim dead at the scene. Merchant ruled the death was the result of massive blunt force trauma.
