A locally-owned Columbus business is closing after being open for nearly three decades.
Rings & Strings, which opened in 1987, will close its doors at the end of March. Denise Reid, the retail store’s owner, told The Dispatch this week the plan is to close out the jewelry side of the store at the end of February. The music side will close at the end of March.
Why is the store closing?
“I’m ready to do something else and get out from behind that counter,” Reid said, adding that she will assist her husband in his contracting business.
Each week between now and late March, prices will be reduced on items in the store.
Rings & Strings has been located at 2116 Hwy. 45 N. — across from Belk — since 2000. It is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and closed Sunday.
Reid noted that someone is interested in opening a music store at the location. Those plans, however, are not yet finalized.
Moving on.
Lowndes County is getting its 14th Dollar General.
The store will be located on Highway 12 East in Steens. Construction began about a month ago. Dan MacDonald, a senior director of corporate communications with Dollar General, told The Dispatch the new retail store will be housed in a 9,026 square foot building.
There are more than 12,400 Dollar Generals in 43 states. Each one, MacDonald said, primarily serves customers that live within a three- to five-mile radius.
“The company looks for places where we can offer customers an easy and convenient shopping choice,” MacDonald said of Dollar General locating its stores. “We also take demographic trends, competitive factors, traffic patterns and community concerns into consideration. This was a great new location for Dollar General.”
(For what it’s worth: Roughly 5,500 vehicles travel Highway 12 in the Steens area each day, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.)
The Dollar General in Steens will employ six to 10 people. To apply, visit dollargeneral.com/careers.
The store is tentatively slated to open in mid-April.
