A Columbus man is in custody after allegedly leading Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office deputies on a brief chase Wednesday, according to Sheriff Eddie Hawkins.
Shortly before 7 p.m., members of the LCSO Narcotics STING Unit tried to pull over a red Jeep for having no tag in the area of 18th Avenue North and Military Road, Hawkins said.
The driver, identified as Joshua Wilson, 33, tried to flee. He made it around the corner to the roundabout on Military Road at the Highway 82 on-ramp, where he struck an oncoming vehicle head-on and then struck a second vehicle before hitting the road sign at the exit.
Wilson jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot, leading deputies to the nearby Comfort Inn and Suites, located at 129 Brickerton Street, Hawkins said. He was caught in a hallway on the third floor.
“He didn’t have a room there,” Hawkins said. “We checked, and he was not a registered guest.”
Officers discovered about 70 grams of THC edibles in the car, Hawkins said.
“That’s a lot of gummies,” Hawkins said. “Anything over 30 grams is a felony amount.”
Wilson faces charges of felony fleeing, felony possession of a controlled substance and no tag, Hawkins said.
Wilson complained of a shoulder injury and was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, where he was treated and released, Hawkins said.
None of the other drivers were injured, Hawkins said.
Wilson was behind bars at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center as of press time.
