CLAY COUNTY – A man shot during an alleged armed robbery Saturday at the Waverly Ferry boat ramp is in critical condition at a Memphis hospital.
The alleged perpetrator appears to have later turned the gun on himself.
Kyle Richardson, 47, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after committing the alleged robbery, Sheriff Eddie Scott said Monday in a press release.
Deputies responded at about 4:45 p.m. to a shooting at the boat ramp at Waverly Ferry Recreation Park on Waverly Mansion Road, the press release said.
Deputies found a male victim suffering multiple gunshot wounds, as well as Richardson’s body, both in the facility’s parking lot.
The injured victim was airlifted to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo before later being taken to a Memphis hospital, where he remains in critical condition, Scott told The Dispatch.
The press release said deputies believe Richardson walked up to the victim in the parking lot and held him at gunpoint before taking some of his “personal belongings.” Scott said it appeared Richardson shot the victim multiple times, and a handgun was found near Richardson’s body.
Deputies also found items on Richardson’s body believed to be stolen from the injured victim, Scott said.
Scott said investigators are trying to determine why Richardson was at the dock Saturday.
Richardson’s body has been sent to the Mississippi Crime Lab for an autopsy, the press release said.
Scott said the investigation remains ongoing in conjunction with Clay County Coroner Alvin Carter.
Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact the Clay County Sheriff’s Office at (662) 494–2896 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151.
