Sealed bids for the access road, rail spur and loading pad portions of the expansion for the Mississippi Steel Processing plant in Lowndes County were opened during Wednesday’s county supervisors’ meeting.
For the access road, which would connect to Airport Road, bids from five potential contractors were opened. The estimated cost of that portion of the project is $739,000. The lowest bidder was Ausbern Construction at $716,354.04, followed by Phillips Contracting ($717,106.30.), TLSL, Inc., ($755,944.75) Malouf Construction ($773,628.79) and Eutaw Construction ($783,314.32).
For the rail spur, estimated to cost $129,000, Prewett Enterprises submitted the lowest bid at $112,668.50, followed by Malouf Construction ($118,746.67) and Continental Rails & Excavating ($141,443.40).
For the loading pad, estimated to cost $179,000, Continental Rails & Excavating had the lowest bid at $167,587.90, followed by Gregory Construction Services ($169,665.96) and Malouf Construction ($174,759.84).
Supervisors opted to take those bids under advisement and will likely receive recommendations from county engineer Bob Calvert at their Aug. 5 meeting, at which time the contracts will be awarded.
Expansion of the plant is funded by a Community Development Block Grant and could create up to 40 additional jobs for the facility, Golden Triangle Planning and Development District consultant George Crawford said earlier this year.
