Spotlight Barbershop owner Arthur Brewer doesn’t condone violence of any sort, but especially not gun violence, which is why he has a “no guns” sign posted in his shop window.
The signage didn’t seem to deter a Saturday afternoon shooting at the business.
“I don’t know why they did it. I don’t know what the situation is surrounding it, but I just know it happened there at my business,” Brewer told The Dispatch. “And we were just innocent bystanders (who) just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, just a victim of the circumstances.”
Lewayne Robertson, 21, is charged with four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and Quindarius Robertson, 25, is charged with four counts of accessory after the fact after the two brothers opened fire in the barbershop at about 1:30 p.m.
Columbus Police Department responded to the scene in the 900 block of Alabama Street, where officers found one man suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle for treatment and was in stable condition as of Monday morning, Public Information Officer Bryan Moore told The Dispatch.
Quindarius Robertson, who fled the scene, was found and treated at Baptist for a single gunshot wound. He was released from the hospital and arrested the same afternoon. Lewayne Robertson was also arrested Saturday.
Moore said investigators believe the incident Saturday stems from a 2023 shooting involving the victim and Quindarius Robertson.
At the time, Quindarius Robertson had allegedly attempted to break into the victim’s home after seeing his wife inside, at which point the resident allegedly shot Quindarius. The shooting was deemed self defense due to the attempted break-in.
Moore said additional charges related to the Saturday shooting are expected against the brothers once investigators determine how many people were inside the barbershop during the shooting.
Brewer said there has been a history of altercations and shootings in the parking lot of the shopping center around his business, but no shots have ever been fired inside until Saturday.
While he is still inspecting the damage from the gunshots, Brewer said he has already found at least $4,000 worth of damage that occurred to his store, including damaged windows, TVs, countertops and drink coolers.
“Thank God no one got seriously hurt or killed. That’s the most important thing,” Brewer said. “The material stuff can be replaced, but a life can’t.”
The Robertsons are being held in Lowndes County Adult Detention Center without bond.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information pertaining to the shooting is asked to contact CPD at (662) 244-3552 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151.
