August unemployment rates fell in Oktibbeha and Clay counties for the first time in three months, while Noxubee County continued to rise.
Lowndes saw no difference from July, according to data released this week by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
Oktibbeha and Clay County fell 0.3% and 0.4%, both currently sitting at 4%. Noxubee County rose to 6.3% and Lowndes remained at 4.1%.
However, rates in Lowndes, Oktibbeha and Clay County are down between 0.2% and 0.4% from August 2022, with Clay showing the most year over year improvement. Noxubee County saw no difference.
On the state and national level, Mississippi fell 0.1% while the nation rose 0.1%, respectively. Both the nation and state sit at 3.9% unemployment. However, Mississippi’s rate fell 0.2% from 4.1% in August 2022, and nationally it rose 0.1% from 3.8%.
The number of people unemployed in Oktibbeha and Clay counties fell to 880 and 360, respectively. In contrast, Noxubee rose to 200, bringing the total number of unemployed people in the Golden Triangle down by 130 people since June.
There are currently 2,430 people unemployed, marking a 5.9% improvement from August 2022.
There are currently 48,600 people unemployed in the state, down 1.8% from 2022. Across the nation, there are 6,623,000, compared to 6,256,000 in 2022.
