A 13-year-old Vernon, Ala. girl was killed Saturday morning in a one-vehicle accident on Highway 12 in Lowndes County.
About 12:30 a.m. paramedics and police responded to an accident near Duncan Road, about two miles from the Alabama state line, said Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant, noting Janet Lea York, 13, of Vernon, Ala. was killed in the accident, during which a Chevrolet Malibu flipped and hit some trees.
The driver, whose name and age have not been released, left the scene and later was transported, by personal vehicle, to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle.
He subsequently was transferred to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
An investigation, conducted, by the Mississippi Highway Patrol and Lowndes County Coroner”s Office, is ongoing. An autopsy has been scheduled at the state crime lab in Jackson.
The driver, who likely is a juvenile, has not been charged in the accident.
