4-County Electric Power Association was honored recently for communication efforts by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and the Council of Rural Electric Communicators. The cooperative won three first-place Spotlight on Excellence awards, including Best Feature Story, Best Photo Essay and Best Internal Newsletter, and one second place finish for Best Feature Story at the NRECA national communicators conference in Kansas City, Mo., earlier this month.
The cooperative received an Award of Excellence in the Best Feature category for an article on Steve Delk, a local man who made all the famous Indiana Jones fedora hats used in the movie, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” In addition, 4-County also received an Award of Merit in the Best Feature Story category for an article on 4-County”s response for help from Arkansas cooperatives during last year”s ice storms. Brad Barr, 4-County communications coordinator, wrote the articles. “Indiana Jones meets Mississippi Steve,” appeared in 4-County”s pages of the February 2009 issue of Today in Mississippi. The cooperative also received an Award of Excellence in the Best Photo Essay category for an article and accompanying photos of Leland James, an area chainsaw woodcarver. Barr wrote the award-winning article, “In a world of his own,” and took the photos that ran in the cooperative”s pages in the June 2009 issue of Today in Mississippi.
The cooperative nabbed an Award of Excellence in the Best Internal Newsletter category for PowerSource, a publication for 4-County employees. Barr coordinates the publication.
This is the sixth straight year the cooperative has won awards at the national competition.
