Campaign finance reports show the sheriff’s race is where the most money is being raised, with most other races sluggish or still reporting no fundraising.
In the sheriff’s race, incumbent Eddie Hawkins reported $21,799 in contributions during the month of May, compared to $1,000 raised by his opponent, Willie D. Jones.
This round of campaign finance reports were due June 9 and cover the period of May 1 to May 31. Candidates are required to itemize any donation or expenditure greater than $200.
Primary elections are Aug. 8, and the general election is Nov. 7.
Sheriff
Republican Eddie Hawkins reported $21,799 in contributions, of which $15,350 was itemized. Johnston-Tombigbee Furniture gave $2,500; John S. Beard gave $2,000; Danny King gave $1,500; Glenn Machine Works, Teresa Thompson, Mary V. Thompson and City Tele-Coin Company of Bossier City, Louisiana, gave $1,000 each; T. Russell Sheffield, Denise G. Good, Dale Nelson, William Strauss, Mary J. Bailey, Charles A. Younger, Jerry M. Fortenberry and Triangle Air and Electric gave $500 each; Bill Russell and S&S Landscaping each gave $300; and McCrary-West Construction Co., Jack H. Hayes and Cindre Henson each gave $250.
Hawkins reported $1,983 in expenditures.
Democrat Willie D. Jones reported $1,000 in non-itemized contributions and $956 in expenditures.
Chancery Clerk
Republican Incumbent Cindy Goode reported no contributions, and $100 in disbursements.
Democrat challenger Andre Deforest Roberts did not timely file a report.
District 1 Supervisor
Brock, a Republican, reported $200 in contributions and $1,344 in expenditures.
Republican Kevin Clark reported no donations and no expenditures.
Matt Furnari, also running as a Republican, reported no contributions and $2,778 in expenditures.
Lone Democrat Tommy Lee Kidd reported $1,800 in contributions, which came out of his own pocket, and $1,270 in expenditures.
Incumbent Harry Sanders is not seeking reelection.
District 2 Supervisor
Incumbent Trip Hairston reported $677 in non-itemized donations. He reported spending $1,341, of which $1,320 was itemized.
Challenger Brad Holliman reported no contributions and $1,801 in expenditures.
Both are running as Republicans.
District 3 Supervisor
Republican Tony Hannah did not timely file a report.
Chad Frasher, running as a Republican, reported no contributions or expenditures.
Republican Andy Williamson reported $396 in donations – which came out of his pocket – and $396 in expenditures.
Independent Christopher Moore reported no contributions but $2,564 in expenditures.
Incumbent John Holliman is not seeking reelection.
District 4 Supervisor
Herman Phillips self-funded $109, which was his sole reported contribution. He reported no expenditures.
Anthony Sanders did not file a report by the deadline.
Incumbent Jeff Smith raised $1,100 over the reporting period. He reported spending $1,042.
All three are running as Democrats.
District 5 Supervisor
Incumbent Democrat Leroy Brooks reported no contributions or expenditures.
Independent challenger Tiffany Turner did not timely file a report.
District 3 Justice Court Judge
James E. Gunter reported a single $1,500 contribution from himself, and $1,565 in expenditures.
Joseph Mickens did not file a report by the deadline.
Incumbent Peggy Phillips reported no contributions and no expenditures.
All three are running as Democrats.
Tax Collector
Maci Griffin reported $200 in non-itemized contributions, as well as $365 in expenditures.
Kalee Talley reported $400 in non-itemized contributions, and $524 in expenditures.
Diane Whaley Stephens reported no contributions, but reported spending $8,336.
All three are running as Republicans.
Coroner
Incumbent Republican Greg Merchant reported no contributions, as well as $200 in non-itemized expenditures.
Democrat challenger Leonard Williams Jr. did not file a report by the deadline.
Non-competitive races
Circuit Clerk Teresa Barksdale, Tax Assessor Greg Andrews, County Attorney William Starks, District 1 Justice Court Judge Chris Hemphill, District 2 Justice Court Judge Ron Cooke, District 1 Constable Chris Griffin, District 2 Constable Joe Ables Jr., District 3 Constable Willie “Sonny” Sanders, District 2 Election Commissioner Nancy Ford Duke, District 3 Election Commissioner Yuvonda Youngblood and District 4 Election Commissioner Sherry Guyton Odneal are all running unopposed.
