Sometimes the doors we open must close. Sorry to say it, but it’s true.
Tuesday Morning is closing all 200 locations, including its store in Starkville at 402 Hwy. 12, next to Bargain Hunt. The company has also been bought for $32 million by Hilco Merchant Resources, a liquidation company.
The Dallas-based business filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February, vowing to turn the store around. But on Saturday, it announced its sale to Hilco and that it will close its stores by mid-May.
With the announcement, the company has also issued a liquidation sale of up to 30% off all items, and all customers can use gift cards and return items through May 13.
Store Manager Kenya Clark said the Starkville location has not yet received confirmation for when the store will close but is offering its sale at 10% off all items. The store will provide further updates soon.
“It’s definitely a process,” Clark said. “With retail, you really just never know what’s going to happen.”
You might need a drink after hearing yet another retail store is closing. Well, here is a team of folks looking to make that happen for you.
Ken Ezelle is part of a group planning to bring The Landing, a new restaurant and bar, to Starkville in the former University Drive Laundromat building at 706 University Drive, next to Bulldog Burger in the Cotton District.
Ezelle posted about the prospective business Monday and said it could feature a rooftop patio space and loads of Starkville memorabilia.
While Ezelle didn’t wish to speak about the new business beyond his post just yet, I’m confident it will be an excellent addition to town, and I hope that like me, you can’t wait to hear more.
Moving to Columbus, Mita’s Himalayan Kitchen, a Nepalese and Indian fusion restaurant, opened Wednesday at 2318 Hwy. 45 N.
Co-owner Sushmita Bhatta told me she is very excited to be open after a few delays in acquiring kitchen equipment and preparing the restaurant.
“I’m super excited,” Bhatta said. “I’m kind of nervous at the same time because this is the first time I’ve ever had my own business. Finally, my dream has come true.”
Bhatta even posted the restaurant’s menu on its Facebook page in April, with many unique Nepalese dishes to choose from. I’m particularly excited about the chili dumplings, chicken chow mein and butter chicken.
Getting into downtown, Dipa Bhattarai is going about the process of opening an eyebrow and eyelash salon, Deeva Brows and Lashes at 109 Fifth Street S. in the former Foxhole Comics building.
Bhattarai said she decided to move to the downtown area in April after having a lot of success with her original store, Deeva Brows and Beauty, located at 909 Alabama St.
“I saw that the area gets a lot of good foot traffic,” she said. “… I think any business in Columbus would love to have its presence downtown because downtown is the heart of any city.”
Bhattarai said the business could open up any day now, and she is waiting for more of the clientele to learn about the new location while also taking care of signage and a few other details before opening.
Finally, my friends, a more than 50-year-old business in West Point, is marking down its merchandise and closing for good.
D & B Furniture, located at 757 W. Main St., is having a going-out-of-business sale.
Co-owners Roy and Doris Mitchell put a sign up in front of the store last week announcing their retirement.
Mitchell said she and her husband aren’t sure when exactly the store will officially close, but they are making sure they have a good send-off in sales before they do. Here is wishing them all the best in retirement.
Well, folks that’s a wrap. Make sure to check back in next week for more goings on in business.
