An Alabama man who is a registered sex offender was arrested after going on school grounds in Lowndes County, according to a press release from Lowndes County Sheriff Eddie Hawkins.
On Monday night Marcellus Jacques Redmond, 27, was arrested at a ball game at Columbus Christian Academy.
Redmond, of Kennedy, Alabama, is currently on probation for second-degree rape, according to the Alabama Sex Offender Registry. It is illegal for a person required to register as a sex offender to be present in any school building or on school property when people under 18 are present.
Redmond was charged with sex offender entering school property, which is a misdemeanor, according to the press release.
Deputies were tipped off that Redmond had attended a ball game at CCA on Friday and was expected back Monday night, the press release said. He does not have children who attend the school but allegedly had been going to games there.
Deputies spoke with his probation officer in Alabama, who allegedly told him not to cross state lines or be at any school function or on school grounds, according to the press release. School officials were not aware of Redmond’s conviction or sex offender status.
Redmond will also face a probation violation charge in Alabama, which is a felony.
“Our office is concerned about predators and offenders being on school property, and rightly so, especially during events when children are present,” Hawkins said. “We take every one of these requirements for sex offenders seriously, and failure to comply will result in an arrest.”
