An online survey released to the public this week suggested eight potential new names for the Mississippi University for Women.
The names listed on the survey, which participants are asked to rank, are University of Northern Mississippi, West Appalachia University, University of Central Mississippi, University of Eastern Mississippi, Northern Mississippi University, Callaway State University, Weathersby State University and Williams State University.
There is also an option to choose “another name based on the university’s location” or “another name based on the university’s historical figures.” If that option is selected, the survey will offer a write-in prompt for those suggestions as selected.
Callaway State would be named for Mary Callaway, a founding faculty member, chair of mathematics for 15 years and two-time interim president.
Weathersby State would be named for Mary Ellen Weathersby Pope, a 1926 graduate who established home economics at the college and taught the first racially integrated class. She also holds an MUW honorary doctorate.
Williams State would be named for Blanche Colton Williams, a 1898 graduate and internationally-known scholar and mentor of women’s education.
The survey also includes questions regarding values in a university’s name such as geographic location and importance of historical figures.
At the end of September, the university formed a task force to determine whether to change the name for the 175-year-old institution, and if so, what the new name will be. MUW has been known under the current moniker since 1974 but has accepted male students since 1982.
The MUW naming task force worked with Love Communications, a full-service marketing and communications agency out of Salt Lake City, Utah, to build the survey.
After completing the survey, participants are invited to enter information for the opportunity to be randomly selected to participate in a focus group related to the results of the survey.
The survey can be found at lovecommslc.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5BaxCpHKoFnImsC.
It will be open until midnight Monday.
