Contractors from Witt Works Environmental, of Nesbit, have been removing old gasoline tanks from the former Chevron site, located at the corner of Fifth Street and Fifth Avenue North. Columbus Redevelopment Authority Board President Marthalie Porter said work on the site got underway last year, but removal of the tanks was delayed due to a combination of bad weather and having to wait for the contractor to be available to do the work. One tank remained to be hauled off as of Wednesday morning. In the next four to six weeks the site will be leveled off and seeded, Porter said, similar to what was done with the Gilmer Inn on Main Street after its demolition. The CRA hopes to market the site to a developer as part of its plan to turn the corner into the gateway to the redeveloped area around the Burns Bottom neighborhood and the Lowndes County Soccer Complex.
