The Dispatch’s advertising staff, led by advertising director Beth Proffitt, was recognized for General Excellence among the largest papers in the state at the Mississippi Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest. The top honor was one of 25 total awards and 14 first place awards the paper received at a luncheon in Jackson Saturday.
Graphic designer Jackie Taylor took home first place awards for Retail Ad B&W (Village Cycle Center); Service Ad (Friendly City Mini Warehouses); Political Ad (Jackie DiCicco); and Magazine Ad — Institutional (Lowndes County Board of Supervisors).
Graphic designer Kelly Ervin received first place plaques for Healthcare Ad Color (Village Animal Hospital); Restaurant Ad Color (The Southern); Small Space Ad for a retirement ad; Magazine Ad — Grocery/Restaurant (Mike’s Liquor).
Publisher Peter Imes won first place for House Ad for a circulation promotion ad he designed.
The paper’s Insight magazine — a guide to resources throughout the Golden Triangle — won first place for Niche Publication, with the judge noting, “Great layout and tons of information!”
The Dispatch was also recognized for its efforts to build interest in the 2021 Columbus municipal elections by hosting a candidate forum and publishing its voter guide.
“I’m incredibly proud of our advertising staff, especially for bringing home the contest’s top honor for the second year in a row,” Imes said.
Mississippi Press Association hosts two awards luncheons annually. The advertising awards are typically announced at the organization’s Mid-Winter Conference in January, but that conference was delayed this year due to COVID. The editorial awards are held in June, and The Dispatch’s newsroom won top honors at last year’s editorial awards ceremony.
